UON TRAINS SENIOR ADMINISTRATORS ON BECOMING INNOVATION CHAMPIONS

The University of Nairobi held a two day workshop on 8th and 9th February 2018 at the Chiromo Conference Centre to train Senior Administrators, Deans of Faculties and Directors of schools respectively on becoming Innovation Champions.

The training was facilitated by Prof. Tim Waema of the College of Biological and Physical Sciences.

The guest speaker was Dr. Evans Baiya, an American scholar with a wealth of knowledge on innovation and who is also the author of a book entitled “The Innovator’s Advantage”. Dr. Baiya simplified the term “Innovation Champion” to mean, “doing it differently to add value”

The main objectives of the training were to identify innovation champions in each of the units, identify problem-opportunity that if solved can bring about significant visible impact and to be able to use Rapid Outcome Innovation (ROIn) methodology to plan and monitor the implementation of innovations.

Dr. Baiya stressed that for these objectives to be realized there needs to be driving factors and change from the norm through initiatives such as, having ideation sessions, developing and empowering teams, having comprehensive collaborations and clear understanding of the institution’s customers who would also be the best source for ideas. He said that an innovation champion should be passionate, aggressive, self-driven, a collaborator and must have emotional intelligence.

The desired outcomes of the training were among others, to create room for innovations, identify idea scouts and idea connectors, eliminate bureaucracy in information flow by advocating information interphase from bottom to top versus top to bottom and change the mindset of the players. This would result in increased quality of services to customers, improved institutional financial performance, enhanced motivation and commitment to staff, increased research productivity and a better future in line with the University’s Strategic Plan.
